So today I am scared. It may be the residuals from watching the second episode of “Fringe” last night, which figuratively scared the bajesus outta me. However, I am more inclined to think that my shaky legs, sense of dread, and overwhelming anxiety about the state of the world is due to politics. It usually is.
I am scared because some of the people that NEED to support the squashing of Prop 8 are NOT supporting it. Individuals who have the influence and have the means are saying that the economy is too rough and that they just can’t pinch it out. They apologize to ME as if they are disappointing ME or letting ME down. Don’t they realize that this proposition is for THEM? Don’t they realize the marriages they want, the families they want to protect, and the love that they want recognized is THEIRS? This is not a proposition that affects just one person or one family. This proposition affects an entire community.
I am also scared because this election has such huge stakes. If Obama loses… I firmly believe that McCain and Palin will bring the United States down. So far down that the entertainment industry strikes, the fires of California, the crisis in the financial industry, the shortage of affordable gas, and the horrible emergency responses to natural disasters… these will seem PALE in comparison to the fear mongering, world hate, and poverty that will be brought to us.
But then I look at the picture of hope and I just think to myself… think LESS and DO more. One foot in front of the other. We will triumph. We just have to.
