Today is inspiring. New polls indicate that Barack Obama is AHEAD of John McCain by 6% in the general election. Recent polls are also showing that there is a turn in favor of Prop 8 failing in the state of CA. And of course, national attention was gained when Brad Pitt decided to donate $100,000 to the campaign in support of equality.
I’ve also been inspired (as I’ve continued to mention in this blog) by my peers and their involvement in discussions and actions related to the state of this country. Even when we are out at the bar and we are socially drinking and hanging out, I can hear the buzz and discussion about politics. I can hear people talking about their fears and their hopes.
Last night, I had my first phone bank at my home. Being the virgo that I am, I definitely went all out. I pre-printed scripts and call sheets based on the training I got at Camp Obama. I made sure we had extension chords available so that we could plug in the extra computers. I made sure there was wine and snacks to go around. My good buddy Maital showed up with the chips and dips and the troops around 7pm.
We made over 200 calls within just one hour. Most of the people weren’t home (it was Friday night after all). But those few that were gave us some good stories and good laughs. Most of them were much older (like 75 years +). It was chilling to think that a group of 20 somethings were calling this group of individuals that have such an incredible legacy in this country. It was wonderful to know that we were building a bridge between generations. It was inspiring to remember that it was in honor of Barack Obama and that his presence in the public stage is what made it possible.
I’ve also been informed of a change of heart from some pretty powerful ladies who had originally declined to financially support the No On Prop 8 campaign. I am excited that due to some unknown reason (though I blame consistent nudging from us girls)… they have decided to provide us an opportunity to raise funds for the campaign. I will be in Ohio when it all happens, so I will get to support the event from afar and help make it successful. It’s exciting.
I feel like it’s so worth it. All this time and energy and the fear and hope that makes us all participate right now. It is incredibly rewarding and I just feel like I am gaining so much in life experience and pride right now. What an honor it is to be present and participatory.
