I’ve got a great camera, but not the best camera. As a result, I get very disappointed on a regular basis when the lens doesn’t seem to capture the colors of the world as my eyes do. In this picture, I was ecstatic to see that the beautiful yellow/green of the fallen leaf shown in all its glory. Juxtaposed with the steel gray of the background and the composition in the frame with scattered brush, I love the way this picture turned out. Courtesy of SF Golden Gate Park.

This week’s photo comes to us from my travels in Hong Kong. The city is situated on a very steep island and is consistently modern in its appearance with high rise buildings cutting in line for your view of the mountaintop. Ironically, on “Hollywood Road” there is an ancient temple called Man Mo that business-suit-clad residents briefly stop into before their days’ business. In the center of the temple is this array of incense spires that you see pictured here. The lighting was pretty spectacular that day and the smoke added a nice affect for the camera.

For this picture, I have to give the majority of credit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for good lighting and incredible skeletal reconstruction. I recently revisited the aquarium with my mother and godfather and joined all the small children in being in complete awe of all that the water has to offer. It tooks quite a few takes to get this shot because I could not use a flash, so I’m ecstatic that the skeleton appears “floating” in frame, just as it did in its tank at the aquarium.

While Sin City is known more for its debauchery than for its more redeeming qualities (such as fantastic food and entertainment), I am always amazing by the amount of electricity the city uses. This photo was taken on the new Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas. I could get lost in this picture trying to find all the nooks and crannies that fit into one frame.

I had the honor of being a member of the crew of the film “A Marine Story.” This film has done incredibly well on the festival circuit in the last year, winning 15+ “Best Of Festival” awards along the way. While filming, we were on location on a hilltop in Saugus, CA. One of my favorite pictures from that day flared the lens and reflected the sunset off an old and rickety white picket fence. It was one of those moments that you know you could never create, you just had to be present for.

In Bali, Indonesia, there are spas along the roadside in which you can enjoy absolutely heavenly treatments. At this location, we were greeted with hot tea and a bath in which to soak our feet while they prepared the room. Floating with rose petals, it was aromatic and so calming. I love this photo because of all the contrasting textures: rocks, textile, bowl, and petals on water. Each conjures a separate tactile association yet exist cohesively in one space.

Paris’s underground metro system is one of the most efficient and advanced in the world. Train travel at it’s best, in this traveler’s humble opinion. Though very modern train cars roam along the tracks, I love the old time signs that appear every once in a while. This shot was captured on a rainy day in the Montemarte area of the city.

In this picture, I enjoy the way the ominous sky seems pierced through by an equally ominous font. Considering this sign appears at the top of a stairway going underground, the entire mood here seems to match the feeling one might get looking into the unfamiliar abyss of the Paris underground. The bright orange glow of the accompanying lamp post seems to indicate even further warning.

In the northwest of Belgium is a quaint port city called Brugge. Referred to as “The Venice of the North” because of its canals and waterways, it’s also a great place to catch a sight of the famous windmills in this Flemish region. While I was visiting in November 2010, the Christmas festival was being erected in the city center. No such festival is complete without an ice skating rink and I couldn’t help but notice that the already gorgeous city sites looked brilliant in their reflection on the frozen water.

I appreciate the monotone slate blue of the reflection as it truly mirrors the sky from that cloudy and chill day. I appreciate that from where I stood, the reflection was inverted so it appears as though this picture is “upside down,” when in fact this is exactly what I was looking at as I stared into the ice. This silhouette itself is interesting as the tree reflected here in front of the city capital has so much character. The texture makes the visage looks like a painting I’d love to hang on my wall.
