VIDEO: The Unatti Girls

This video is also featured in my recent post entitled “Livin’ the Dream.” In this post, however, I’d like to introduce my readers to the subject of the documentary that my colleague, Patty Ramsey and I are creating.

I’ve been talking about the film for over a year now and through multiple attempts at explanation and the questions resulting from my various versions, I’ve narrowed down the “tagline” of the film, if you will:

“A commentary on the concept of family told through the story of thirteen orphan girls in Nepal.”

We came up with this concept as we realized immediately upon landing in the East that the definition of family was different in Nepal. In this magical land nestled in the Himalayas, everyone is a brother (bhai) or sister (didi), and this is not because of large family size. Each resident or guest is related whether by blood or spirit to one another.

In a home full of girls that have been abandoned or whom have family members that can’t care for them, the words mother and father are even more fuzzy in definition. Instead, they resort to uncle Ramesh who runs the home, though he is often one of the only adult male figures these young girls interact with on a daily basis. The girls’ ability to adapt and free themselves of the burden (and unfortunately also the privilege) of having blood lines to rely on provides them the unique ability to treat everyone as equal.

When Patty and I return to Nepal in two months, we’ll be digging deeper into each girl’s personal story of triumph and how the people around them (their self-declared family) has helped them persevere. We’ll also be breaking ground and beginning further visioning of a new home that will fit even more children in need of family. It’s an incredibly (and unexpected) turn of events for the girls and for our film and will definitely be crucial to filling out the narrative.

It has been difficult to express to people how beautiful I think the country of Nepal is. The land and the beautiful people are indescribable to me. I’ve attempted to share with my words just how wonderful I think this magical place is, and though even this does not capture it- I want to share some of the best views.

I’ve created a new “Journey with Janelle” video- this one without words. Set to music that could easily be heard playing in the streets of Bhaktapur, these images were shot during October 2009 in multiple cities in Nepal.

I hope this video inspires you to pay attention to this exciting region of the world and to continue to stay involved with my own work in the region.

Bottles of Pinot Noir from the Laetitia Winery

Obviously I’m a bit addicted to traveling. In particular, I get a kick out of experiences that feel fancy but, in fact, are rather affordable. When my dear friend Patty asked me to travel with her to Central California in order to support a mutual friend’s theater project, I thought, “Let’s kill two birds with one stone!” And alas, we decided to cross off #13 from the “Life To Do List” and go wine-tasting as well.

The drive from Los Angeles up to Santa Maria is about 2.5 to three hours up the 101 Freeway. The views of the famous cali coastline did not disappoint and we truly couldn’t have asked for better weather. While singing along to whatever our iPods threw at us, we made the following “Journey with Janelle” videos about visiting Laetitia Winery.

We were particularly lucky in that the day we arrived happened to be an “Open Cellar” day on the winery. They had live music and had opened all of their cellars and brought out their professional staff to tell us about everything that goes into making their incredible product. The entire experience cost only $10. We brought along our $5 footlongs from Subway and after buying a couple of bottles for our own expanding vino collection, had spent about $50 for an incredible and lush experience.

As a Pinot Noir lover, I can tell you, Laetitia makes one of my favorites. If you’d like to take a similar adventure, you should visit their website and find out more about the next time they are opening up for guests!

Commercial Craziness

One of the joys of being a twitter-holic is that I constantly learn about the companies and people that I love. Specifically, I love learning about competitions that I can enter to get free stuff!!

One of my favorite companies, STA Travel, is holding a competition in their Michigan State University Office where they asked us to create a 30 second commercial about why STA is so great.

The winner gets a travel voucher for a roundtrip ticket any where in the USA! Being that I am a glutton for travel, especially FREE travel, I created the following entry!

#3: Take a hike!

Though I completed item #3: Hike on a trail outside CA on the “Life To Do List” a while back, I’ve only just now completed the final video from the trip. For a refresher about my visit to North Carolina, Click Here!

As I mentioned a while back, Asheville is an ideal vacation destination for someone like me. As Suze Orman would call me, I am Young Fabulous and Broke! This means that the mini vacation meant experiencing sites, sounds, and tastes, that were affordable but also yummy and different than what I could get back home.

The good news is, Asheville has suprisingly GREAT Mexican food dripping with a red sauce that rivals my SoCal fave El Compadre.

We picked some up on the way to an amazing concert by Susan Tedeschi at the Orange Peel which happened to have the largest ceiling fan I’ve ever seen (the diameter must have been twenty feet!). For a video from that incredible show, see below!

Recently, I traveled with my roommate Trevor to the happiest place on earth. Instead of heading straight to Disneyland, we decided to use his free birthday pass to head on over to “California Adventure.” This newer themepark features skylines from familiar metropolises and attractions with names such as “Soaring Over California” and “California Screamin’.” As a lifetime resident of the Golden State, it’s a pleasure to feel like I’m taking a Cali Road-Trip everytime I visit.
